Q:
What is a potato
cannon, spud gun, spudzooka
etc.
A:
A potato cannon
is exactly what it sounds like. A cannon
made to shoot potatoes. Spud Guns can consist
of many different types of materials or
use different methods of ejecting the potato.
Rumor has it that the first home made cannon
was created by a few bored, alcohol induced
guys who duct taped some beer cans together
into a long cylinder. Each can had its top
and bottom cut off except for the last one
which still had the top left on which was
used to put the fuel in and ignite it (supposedly
lighter fluid/gasoline and a match/lighter
to light it). The ammo they used to lauch
was supposedly a tennis ball (todays soda
cans wont fit a tennis ball).
Q:
My spud gun wont shoot! i got plenty of
fuel in there man i can smell it! Im clickin
the damn thing a hundred times and nothing
is happening. Whats the deal man?
A:
For a spud gun to shoot it must have the
proper mixture of fuel and oxygen to combust.
Most typically it is due to putting too
much fuel in the chamber. Keep experimenting
with the length of time you spray and remember
that less is more!
Q:
What types of materials can be used to construct
potato guns or "Spud Guns"?
A:
Well there is a lot of different materials
you could possibly use to build a powerful
spud gun but the cheapest and most commonly
used pipe is PVC (polyvinyl chloride). PVC
is pretty inexpensive and specialty fittings
are plentifull. PVC is also lightweight
so even if you are a candyass you should
have no problem carrying/holding a PVC spud
gun.
Q:
What can i use for fuel?
A:
Aerosol propelled cans like hairspray, deodorant,
degreaser and starting fluid are the most
common . Propane and Mapp gas are typically
used on advanced spud guns . I personally
use Starting fluid and denatured alcohol
in the guns i shoot that arent rigged up
with a propane tank. Starting fluid or Denatured
Alcohol provides a nice clean burn and the
ease of spraying into the chamber directly.
Do not use any sort of solid fuel such as
gunpowder. Dont use gasoline either as it
will eat away at the chemical bonds made
from cementing the fittings together, the
PVC itself seems to stand up to it but you
will most likely shoot the barrel or some
other fitting off which could hurt someone.
Also, dont force raw oxygen from a tank
or do something crazy like use welding gas
as you will probably blow up the cannon.
Q:
How can i get multiple sparks from a BBQ
ignitor? How do BBQ clickers work?
A:
BBQ clickers create electricity from a piezoelectric
diode. The clicking sound you hear when
you push the button down is from a spring
loaded hammer driving down on a crystal
diode that generates voltage when pressure
is applied. In order to get multiple sparks
from a BBQ clicker you must wire your ignition
points in series, not parallel. Wiring the
ignition points in a parallel circit will
only jump the gap with the least electrical
resistance. Wiring it in series forces the
circuit to make a complete loop through
two (or more) spark gaps.
Possibilities soon to come in the future: Custom
all-in-one fan controller box AND stungun ignition. Modified propane attachments,
custom meter pipes and valve systems, automatic solenoid valves, portable and
onboard propane setup. Ammunition section: rubber bouncy balls, plastic balls
(high density), injection molded ammunition, rifled slugs, pvc rockets, breech
loading barrels, bolt action barrels. More air cannons and air cannon accessories.
Piston valves, ball valves, sch. 80 unions, precut burst disks, safety blowoff
valves, flow regulators, check valves, custom air gauges.
